Troubleshooting declined contactless card payment

After every few contactless payments, you'll need to retry with chip and PIN. Once you've paid with chip and PIN, contactless payments will work again. This is because of new security rules, affecting all banks.

Some places might not be ready for this change yet, so will show a regular decline message. We'll send you a notification when you need to retry with chip and PIN, and let you know in advance if your next payment needs to use chip and PIN.

These rules don't affect Apple Pay and Google Pay payments, or Transport for London payments where chip and PIN isn't available.
