What Under 16s family members can do

Adding someone else as a family member means you can look after your Under 16s accounts together.

Family members should be someone you share caring and financial responsibility with. They need to be closely related to the child, and over the age of 18.

We may ask them to verify their relationship to the child at a later date.

Family members need to have a Monzo account. You can add someone you share a joint account with, but you don’t need to share a joint account to add someone as a family member.

What can family members do?

Family members can:

  • Add money to the child’s card – from a Monzo personal or joint account

  • View card activity – see the child’s balance and transactions

  • Manage the card – freeze and defrost it if needed

  • View Pots – see Pot deposits and withdrawals

  • Receive notifications – about the child’s activity

  • Leave the Under 16s account if they want to

Only the main account holder can:

  • Add or remove other family members

  • Close a child account

  • Move money out of the account

  • Set spending limits

  • Grant a child access to the app and view the PIN

  • Lock Pots

Who owns the money in Under 16s accounts?

The main account holder legally owns the money in Under 16s accounts.

We’ll include the total funds in any Under 16s accounts in the main account holder’s overall FSCS allowance with us, which is £85,000. You can’t use the FSCS allowance of the person you invite as a family member.

You also won't be able to transfer the Under 16s account ownership to the other family member.
