What happens to a Pension when someone dies?
If the person who passed away held a Pension (SIPP) with us, we’re here to help you sort everything out.
This account is provided and managed by Monzo along with our investment partner, Seccl. Closing them works a little differently from a standard Monzo current or savings account because we need to make sure Seccl have everything they need.
What you’ll need to share with us
To help Seccl process the closure smoothly and securely transfer any remaining money, there are a few specific document rules to keep in mind:
A completed death benefit questionnaire: We’ll give this to you when you get in touch. Once you’ve completed it, we'll need a scanned copy sent back.
A physical true copy of the death certificate: We’ll need an official physical copy sent to us by post. An interim or coroner’s certificate is completely fine, but Seccl cannot accept scanned copies or photographs of death certificates.
Supporting documents: Any other paperwork must be submitted as clear scanned copies (photos cannot be accepted for pension accounts). This includes:
A copy of the Will (if there is one).
A recent bank statement for the estate representative (executor or next of kin) receiving the funds, along with proof of account ownership.
Grant of Probate: If the total value of the pension is over £20,000, we’ll need a copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.
