How we can help you if someone with a Monzo Account dies
We understand that managing finances after the death of a loved one can be difficult. This help article is here to get you started.
Begin by exploring this Bereavement guide, filled with resources that we hope you'll find helpful. Our aim is to make this process as simple and straightforward as possible.
🗣️ Start by Letting Us Know
Our Life Events team is here to help you close someone else’s Monzo account.
How to Reach Us:
Email: bereavements@monzo.com
Call: 0800 802 1281 (UK) or +44 203 872 0620 (International)
What we’ll need
When contacting the Life Events team, share as much of the following as you possibly can:
Full name on the account
Email address on the account
Phone number on the account
Account number
A scanned copy or clear photo of the death certificate
Anyone can let us know about a bereavement, but we can only release funds based on instructions from the next of kin or those representing them, like a solicitor, executor of Probate, Administrator, Chartered Accountant, or Probate Specialist.
For more help with inheritance, visit the government website and Citizen’s Advice.
Death certificates differ across the UK and internationally. We accept most formal records, but if the document isn’t in English or lacks a key to that translates the death certificate into English, you’ll need to have it translated. You can find a translator or interpreter abroad by visiting the gov.uk website
We’ll ask you to fill out an indemnity form. This is an agreement between you - as the next of kin - and Monzo, detailing each party’s responsibilities in closing the account.
If there are any outstanding borrowing, our Life Events team can discuss repayment and settlement options with you.
If there are funeral costs to pay, you can use money from the account. We'll send the payment straight to the funeral directors providing you can offer the final invoice from the funeral service — we can't accept an estimate.
