What is an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) and am I eligible?

If your spouse or civil partner passed away holding an ISA with Monzo, you may be entitled to an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) under UK ISA regulations. This gives you an extra tax-free savings allowance based on the value of their ISA at the time of their death.

How it works

The APS allowance matches the total value of your spouse’s or civil partner’s ISA when they died.

Example: If their ISA was worth £10,000, you would receive an additional £10,000 tax-free ISA allowance. This comes on top of your usual personal annual limit (currently £20,000).

Who is eligible?

To qualify for an APS allowance, you must:

  • Have been married to, or in a civil partnership with, the person who passed away.

  • Have been living together (and not legally separated) at the time of their death.

Important to remember

An APS allowance gives you an extra tax-free savings limit—it’s not an inheritance or direct transfer of the cash inside their ISA. The actual funds held in their account remain part of their estate and must still be processed through our standard bereavement closure steps before being paid out.
