What happens to General Investment Accounts (GIAs), and Stocks & Shares ISAs when someone dies?

If someone who’s died held a Stocks & Shares ISA, or General Investment Account (GIA) with Monzo, we’re here to help you sort everything out.

These accounts are provided and managed by Monzo along with our investment partner, Seccl. Closing them works a little differently from a standard Monzo current or savings account because we need to make sure Seccl have everything they need.

To help Seccl process the closure smoothly and securely transfer any remaining money, there are a few specific document rules to keep in mind:

A physical copy of the death certificate: We’ll need an official physical copy sent to us by post. An interim or coroner’s certificate is completely fine, but Seccl cannot accept scanned copies or photographs of death certificates.

Supporting documents: Any other paperwork must be submitted as clear scanned copies (photos cannot be accepted for investment accounts). This includes:

Grant of Probate: If the total value across their investments is over £20,000, we’ll need a copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. (Note: This is slightly lower than the £25,000 limit for standard Monzo bank accounts.)
