Applying for a 16–17s account from an Under 16s account

Monzo for 16–17s has (almost) everything adults get. We’ve just blocked spending on things you can’t do if you’re under 18.

What do you need?

🆔 A valid photo ID – we accept passports, driving licences and national identity cards. Make sure it’s not expired.

📱 Your own mobile number – we’ll send a text message to verify your number.

📩 An email that’s different to your Under 16s account one. Not all Under 16s accounts use an email. To find out if yours does, follow these steps from your Monzo app Home screen:

  1. Tap your initials / profile in the top left.

  2. Tap ‘Edit profile’.

  3. If there’s an email there, you’ll need to make sure you use a different one.

Make sure you’ve set the email up on your device, as we’ll email you a link to start your 16–17s account application.

Having separate emails means you can still log in to both accounts.

📆 You must be 16 or 17 years old

Then what?

  1. Log out of your Under 16s account

  2. Tap ‘I’m new to Monzo’

  3. Enter your email address

  4. Check your device for our email

  5. Tap the link in it to start

How do you apply?

It takes about 15 minutes:

  1. We’ll ask you some questions

  2. We’ll ask you to take a photo of your ID

  3. We’ll ask you to record a quick video

What happens next?

Once you’ve applied, we just need to check your details. It usually takes between 5 minutes and an hour, but can sometimes take up to 48 hours.

You can use your Under 16s card when out and about as normal. You won’t be able to approve any online purchases in the app while you’re logged out of the Under 16s account.

If your application is successful

Your parent or guardian can move any money in the Under 16s account across to your new account. They’ll just need to go to ‘Payments’ and ‘Pay someone’ in their app.

If you have any recurring payments on your Under 16s card, remember to set them up on your new card once it’s activated.

Your Under 16s account can stay open until you’re 18, so you can come back to it if your application is unsuccessful.
