How do I onboard to Monzo’s Making Tax Digital submission tool?

To be able to use Monzo’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax submission tool, you must be a sole trader who does not pay VAT.

You will need your National Insurance number and your Government Gateway login information. Below will explain how to get started with Monzo's tool:

  1. Head to the Manage Tax section of the app and tap on Start setup in the Get ready for Making Tax Digital section.

  2. If you did not sign up to our Making Tax Digital for Income Tax waitlist, you will be asked a series of eligibility questions to check that our tool is the right fit for your business. You can find more support with these questions here

  3. You are then asked how your business earns its income then you will need to read and accept our terms and privacy notice.

  4. Next, you are asked to connect your HMRC account to your Monzo app. This part will direct you to log into your government portal and give Monzo permission to view and edit Income Tax Self Assessment data.

  5. After you have connected your HMRC account to Monzo, you will need to Sign up for Making Tax Digital on your government portal. You can find more support on this step here Once you have signed up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax with HMRC, return to the Monzo app and tap I've done this.

  6. The next step is to confirm some information about your business. This will help us set up your business tax timeline in the Monzo app.

  7. Congratulations, you are now set up for Making Tax Digital using Monzo’s submission tool! You can now see your timeline in Manage Tax as well as categorise transactions once your tax year starts.

If you run into any issues with the Monzo app, please get in touch with us. If you have any issues connecting your HMRC portal to Monzo, you may need to contact HMRC for support.
