When do students get their maintenance loan?
Getting your maintenance loan is one of the biggest financial moments of the term. It’s the money you’ll rely on for rent, food, books, nights out and post-night out kebabs. But if you’re not sure when it's arriving, the wait can feel long and a little stressful.
This article covers when Student Finance England (SFE) pays maintenance loans, how to get your payment a day early with Monzo, and how eligible customers could even double their student finance payment.
If you get student finance from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, your payment dates might be different. Check with your student finance provider to find out your schedule.
What are the timelines for getting my maintenance loan?
SFE pays maintenance loans in three instalments – one at the start of each academic term: autumn, spring and summer. Your first payment will typically arrive in late September or early October, once you’ve registered with your university. The exact payment dates vary by university, but you can log into your SFE account to check your scheduled payment dates before term begins.
Heads up: SFE can’t release your first payment until your university confirms you’ve registered or enrolled on your course. This usually happens around the start of term, so make sure you complete your university's enrolment process as soon as you can to avoid delays.
Your student finance payment, times two? 💫
We’ve made student finance payments eligible for Double Payday – where we double the salary (or any eligible Bacs payment) of 10 lucky customers every month. It could mean covering more months of rent, building a buffer for unexpected costs, or simply having a little more freedom to enjoy student life.
As your maintenance loan payments are paid termly, there are three chances a year to win. If you win, we’ll send the extra payment through the following month.
Get your maintenance loan a day early with Monzo
SFE sends maintenance loan payments by Bacs, so eligible Monzo customers can choose to receive their money at 4pm the working day before it’s due to arrive. This can be especially useful at the start of term, when rent, groceries and travel all hit at once.
Here’s how it works:
1. Apply for a Monzo personal account
2. Update your SFE account with your Monzo sort code and account number
3. If you’re eligible, you can choose to Get Paid Early. We’ll send you a notification, then you can tap through to drag your maintenance loan into your current account.
Managing your maintenance loan with Monzo
As soon as your maintenance loan arrives, you can separate your money into Pots for things like rent, groceries and everyday spending, so you know what’s left for the rest of the term. Or if you want to make it even easier, set up Salary Sorter once and we’ll automatically split your payment into your chosen Pots every time you’re paid. That means your rent, spending money and savings are organised from the moment your maintenance loan lands.
You can also turn on roundups to save your spare change automatically, and split shared costs with housemates in just a few taps.
Whether you’re managing your usual maintenance loan payment or you’ve been lucky enough to receive a doubled payment through Double Payday, we've got plenty of handy tools to help you manage your money.
Monzo Current Accounts are for UK residents aged 16+. Double Payday is 18+. Eligible payments only. Current account and Double Payday Ts&Cs apply. Student Finance payment dates and processes may change – check the official Student Finance England website for the latest information. Get Paid Early availability is subject to the payment being sent via Bacs.
