How Direct Debits work

Direct Debit is a common way to make regular payments – like paying for a gym membership or phone bill.

The person or organisation you’re paying (the merchant) sets up the Direct Debit for you. This gives them permission to collect money from your bank account whenever a payment’s due. The amount you pay and how often you pay it can vary.

You can cancel a Direct Debit anytime in the Monzo app – just go to the Payments tab and tap Scheduled payments. Make sure you let the merchant know before you cancel your Direct Debit though – they might charge you a fee if you miss a payment.
