What happens if the Monzo app goes down?

If you can’t use the Monzo app when you need to, it can be stressful. You might need to make a payment, check your balance or want to know what’s going on.

Outages are rare, but they can happen. If something does go wrong, we’ve built systems to make sure you can access your money while we work to fix things.

In this article, we’ll explain what happens if the Monzo app goes down, how Monzo Stand-in works during an outage, and how you can stay up to date.

How to check if Monzo's down right now

If the app won't load, check the Monzo status page. It shows whether we’re having a known issue and what's affected. We update it regularly and share when things are back to normal. You can subscribe to updates there so you hear about problems as they happen.

An outage is when a technical problem disrupts some of our services. It usually means all customers, or at least a large portion, are affected.

But sometimes there are other reasons you can't access the app which aren't outages. For example, you might not have any internet access. It’s also worth force closing the app and opening it again.

What actually happens during an outage

When a company’s site or app goes down, that usually means there’s a technical issue on their side.

If there’s an IT systems issue at a bank, you may not be able to:

  • See your balance or transactions

  • Send bank transfers

  • Make card payments

  • Receive money

With Monzo Stand-in, you should still be able to do all of this if our app goes down.

How Monzo Stand-in works during an outage

Here's the good news: even when the app's having a problem, a lot of the important stuff keeps working thanks to Monzo Stand-in.

The app shows a limited experience, but the things you need most keep working.

On top of that:

  • Apple Pay and Google Pay should keep working for contactless payments, even when the app isn't loading properly.

  • Your card often still works at tills and cash machines, even if the app won't load.

So if the Monzo app is down, you've usually still got other ways to pay.

What is Monzo Stand-in

Monzo Stand-in is a fully independent backup bank, covering data, software, and infrastructure, which we can activate instantly during outages. It lets us maintain our service for customers so that they can continue to make payments, withdraw cash, freeze their card, send and receive bank transfers and more – even if the main Monzo app goes down.

Building a reliable bank isn’t only about trying to stop things going wrong and fixing them quickly when they do. We wanted to go a step further and make sure that if anything goes wrong on our side, we limit the negative effects it has on you and your ability to go about your day to day banking.

Because Monzo Stand-in is separate from our main banking platform, it gives us another way to keep essential banking services running smoothly during an outage. It’s one of the ways we’ve designed Monzo to be resilient. And if something does go wrong, we’ll tell you. We update our status page about incidents, including ones that only affect a small number of customers. Major outages are something that all banks have to report to regulators. We also publish statistics on our service performance over time.

What to do if you're affected right now

If the app isn’t working for you, here's what you can check:

  • Make sure you have the latest version of the app. We regularly update the app to fix known bugs and issues. You should also make sure the operating system (OS) on your phone is up to date.

  • Check our official status page to find out if the app is down and which services are affected.

If you’re having trouble making a payment:

  • If you need to pay for something urgent like food, travel, or bills, try a different payment method like your card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

  • Keep receipts or screenshots if you think an outage caused you a problem. They're handy if you need to raise it with us later for help.

Will you get your money back if an outage costs you?

You can raise a complaint with us if an outage causes you a direct loss like a late payment fee. We’ll look into what happened and try to put it right.

If you're not happy with our response, you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). It's free and independent, and they'll review your case fairly.

It's worth being honest about expectations, though. Not every inconvenience counts as a loss you can claim for. But genuine financial harm or loss is always worth raising.

Is my money safe if the Monzo app goes down?

Yes. A technical outage isn't the same as a bank failing, and the two shouldn't be confused.

Your money's protected, even if the app is down or in Monzo Stand-in. We’re part of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). Monzo is a UK bank authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the PRA and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), so your money's protected up to £120,000 per eligible person.¹
