Help using my overdraft less

Overdrafts are for the short-term if you just need to borrow a little extra here and there. But it also means you could pay a lot more in interest if you use an overdraft regularly.

We don't want you to get into more debt than you can handle. So we'll keep an eye on how you're using your overdraft and send you a message if you've used it for 6 months in a row and we've charged you more than 6% of your limit in interest.

How to cut down on using your overdraft

  1. Calculate your interest: to see how much an overdraft could cost you over a period of up to 31 days, use our overdraft cost calculator.

  2. Make a budget: having a clear picture of your total monthly income and expenses can give you a good idea of where your money goes each month, and where you could cut costs. You could use a free online budget tool, like this budget planner by Money Helper.

  3. Get advice from someone else: For free, impartial advice about your money worries, here's a list of organisations you can speak with.

  4. Chat to us: We're here to help. And we'll never ask you to pay anyting you can't afford. Read more about how we can support you on our Money Worries page.
