Accepting online card payments with Stripe from a payment link

How do I accept online card payments with Stripe?

We’ve teamed up with Stripe so that our business customers can take card payments, including Apple Pay or Google Pay. To do that you’ll need to set up a Stripe account from our app, and accept their Ts&Cs.

How it works

When your customers pay by card online, Stripe moves the money from their account to yours, and then to the bank account you’ve asked them to send the money to. They’ll charge you a fee to do this (more on this below).

Stripe will transfer all the money you’ve received in your Stripe account on a given day. So if, for example, 3 customers pay you in a day, they’ll send you one transfer for all three amounts combined a few working days later.

The first payment you take by card will take 7–14 working days to reach your bank account (how long depends on if Stripe need to runs extra checks on it). After that, the money should arrive in your account a few working days after someone pays by card.

Stripe will also help you handle disputes over payments with customers.

How much do Stripe charge in fees?

For each online card payment, Stripe will charge you a fee which they’ll take out of the payment before it gets to your account. Those fees are:

  • £0.20 + 1.5% for standard UK cards

  • £0.20 + 1.9% for premium UK cards

  • £0.20 + 2.5% for cards from the European Economic Area

  • £0.20 + 3.25% for all other cards

(Standard UK cards include cards from Visa, Mastercard and other major providers. Premium cards are commercial, corporate or business cards issued by Visa and Mastercard. You can find out more about this on Stripe’s website.)

We don’t charge you or your customers any fees on top of Stripe’s. But they do pay us commission. And Stripe’s fees are different for contactless card payments – find out how to set up contactless. You can also see more about Stripe’s fees on their website.

How can I check up on my Stripe activity?

You’ll be able to see all of this in your Stripe dashboard, including how much they’ve charged you. You can download invoices) from them too. Head to Settings —> Reporting and Documents —> Documents.

Your dashboard is also where you’ll be able to deal with any disputes over payments. And you can use it to get help if you need it (or you can email Stripe directly).

What happens if I close my Stripe account?

It won’t automatically end your relationship with us. But you won’t be able to take card payments from your customers anymore. The same goes if you close your Monzo account – your Stripe account will stay open too.
