Interviewing for Credit at Monzo

Whether you're actively looking for a new role or simply curious about what's out there, it isn't always obvious what to expect from an interview process. We want to be transparent about how we hire for Credit roles at Monzo, so you know what's coming and why we've designed things the way we have.

Credit at Monzo

Our Credit organisation sits within the Borrowing and Finance Collectives. We focus on enabling access to fair, transparent, and flexible credit while managing risk responsibly.

Our team spans several key squads and domains:

  • Flex (Cards): Responsible for Monzo’s flexible credit card products (Flex Purchase and Flex Build), managing originations and credit limit increases (CLI).

  • Core Borrowing: Scaling everyday consumer lending products, including personal loans and overdrafts.

  • Business Lending: Supporting sole traders and SMEs with business loans, overdrafts, and future commercial credit products.

  • Credit Platform: The shared credit-decisioning infrastructure team handling data sourcing, Credit Reference Agency (CRA) relationships, and policy automation across products.

  • Financial Health: Supporting customers who may be in arrears, vulnerable, or experiencing financial difficulty.

  • Capital, Impairments and Forecasting (CIF): Sitting at the intersection of Finance and Credit Risk, CIF underpins how we model credit losses, manage capital, and execute IFRS 9 forecasting.

Our Interview Structure

While exact stages can vary depending on seniority (e.g., L30/L40 vs. L50/L60 Senior/Lead roles), our core interview process generally follows this structure:

  1. Recruiter Call (30 minutes)

  2. Initial Call (30–45 minutes)

  3. Case Study Interview (60 minutes)

  4. Role Specific Interview (60 minutes)

  5. Values & Collaboration Interview (60 minutes)

For more senior and leadership roles (L50 and above) there’s an additional 60-minute leadership interview to evaluate technical depth alongside team leadership and strategic vision.

Recruiter Call 📞

We usually start with a 30-minute conversation with a member of our hiring team.

This is an opportunity for us to tell you more about Monzo, our Credit team structure, and the role, while answering any questions you have about the process. We'll talk through your background at a high level, align on practicalities and discuss what you're looking for in your next step.

Initial Call 💬

Length: 45 minutes via Google Meet.

This conversation is a two-way chat with one of our Credit Risk Managers or Team Leads and is designed for us to get to know your professional journey so far. We’ll cover:

  • Introductions: Brief background setup.

  • Project deep dive: Walking through a key analytical or credit strategy project you’ve delivered.

  • Motivations & working style: What draws you to Monzo, what excites you about credit strategy, and your preferred career track (individual contributor vs. management).

  • Your questions: Time for you to ask about our culture, tech stack, or portfolio direction.

Tip: Choose a project where you had hands-on involvement and delivered clear, measurable impact. Be prepared to discuss your specific role, the tools used (e.g., SQL, Python), key metrics, and trade-offs made between speed and analytical depth.

Case Study Interview 📊

Length: 60 minutes via Google Meet.

In this stage, you’ll evaluate a real-world commercial business scenario split into four progressive sections where operational and financial data are introduced step-by-step. Have a pen, paper, and basic calculator handy.

  • Non-banking focus: Our case studies are typically set outside traditional banking or financial services. We use non-banking scenarios to evaluate how you structure complex commercial problems, handle financial trade-offs, and make decisions under uncertainty.

  • What we look for:

    • Thinking out loud: Share your inner monologue, state your assumptions, and talk through calculations before arriving at final figures.

    • Structured frameworks: Organise your business considerations clearly.

    • Strategic synthesis: Make confident, data-backed recommendations while considering underlying operational risks.

Role Specific Interview 🧠

Length: 60 minutes via Google Meet.

This interview evaluates your domain-specific analytical, credit risk, or platform management execution.

  • For credit risk & analytics roles: We focus on portfolio investigation scenarios (evaluating entry rates, roll rates, cure rates, or macro shifts), forecasting/IFRS 9 impact assessments, and how you evaluate credit strategy changes. You'll walk us through how you translate complex data into actionable credit policy.

  • For credit platform & supplier roles: We focus on third-party Credit Reference Agency (CRA) data integration, procurement strategies, contract lifecycle management, and cost optimisation.

Tip: Be prepared to discuss a time when a project or strategy didn't perform as expected, focusing on how you tracked divergence, course-corrected, and communicated learnings to stakeholders.

Values & Collaboration 🤝

Length: 60 minutes via Google Meet.

Credit is cross-functional. We work closely with Product, Engineering, Legal, Compliance, and Finance. This behavioural interview focuses on past experiences across four core pillars:

  1. Communication: Translating complex data models, technical frameworks, or credit risk concepts into clear, actionable terms for non-technical partners.

  2. Stakeholder management & collaboration: Managing competing priorities, navigating pushback, and building alignment across teams.

  3. Adaptability & flexibility: Spotting problems outside your direct scope and stepping up to solve them.

  4. Integrity & ownership: Making ethical, customer-centric decisions when balancing growth against risk appetite.

Leadership Interview 👑 (L50+)

Length: 60 minutes via Google Meet.

For our more senior positions, we include a specific stage to evaluate how you scale teams and strategy. This conversation focuses on your ability to provide technical mentorship, manage people, and drive long-term strategic vision.

We want to understand your approach to building a high-performing and inclusive credit culture across three key areas:

  • People development & mentorship: How you coach analysts, provide meaningful feedback, and support the progression of both individual contributors and emerging leaders.

  • Setting direction & strategy: How you convert broad company objectives into actionable squad roadmaps while maintaining high standards for analytical depth and prioritising under constraints.

  • Building team culture & execution: How you create a psychologically safe environment, manage performance challenges, and keep up momentum as the organisation grows.

Tip: Come prepared with several STAR-based examples that showcase your leadership in action. We’re particularly interested in how you’ve navigated performance hurdles or aligned your team’s technical output with wider commercial goals.

Preparation Tips & Best Practices

  • Use the STAR method: When sharing examples, clearly outline the Situation, Task, Action (focusing on what you specifically did), and Result.

  • Highlight trade-offs: Real-world credit decisions involve balancing growth, credit loss, customer experience, and operational constraints. Be ready to talk through alternative approaches you considered and why you chose your path.

  • Ask clarifying questions: In case studies and scenario interviews, don't hesitate to ask for extra context or state reasonable assumptions out loud.

  • Two-way street: Remember, interviews are also your chance to get to know us, our culture, and how we work. Come with questions!
