What support can I get for gambling?

Support for managing your gambling

If you want help to manage, reduce, or stop your gambling, there are lots of tools you can use -both in the Monzo app and through free support outside Monzo.

🧰 Tools in your app

  • Turn on the gambling block: We use standard bank codes to spot and block payments to gambling businesses. The block turns on instantly. If you ever decide to turn it off, there is a cooling-off period before you can spend on gambling again. When you turn the block on, you set up a cooldown period (from 2 days up to 1 year). If you choose to turn the block off, you must wait out your cooldown period before we lift the block. Apply the gambling block.

  • Adjust your spending limits: We can change how much you can spend on your card, withdraw from ATMs, or send via bank transfers. Tap Share With Us below if you want to set this up.

  • Separate your money with Pots: You can put money aside for bills or savings. You can even lock your Pots until a specific date so you can't spend the cash inside them.

Self-exclusion can also be a strong way to protect yourself. The best approach is to cover as many bases as possible: bank blocks, blocking software like GamBan, and GAMSTOP for UK gambling apps and websites.

There are also free external teams who can support you. We highly recommend checking out:

  • GamCare: You can talk to a specialist advisor for free, confidential advice and coping tools.

  • GAMSTOP: A free service that lets you block yourself from logging into all UK online gambling apps and sites at once.

  • GamBan: Blocks access to thousands of gambling websites and apps worldwide.

What the gambling block can't do

The block is a helpful tool, however it’s based on our best efforts to identify gambling transactions on card payments and it is not designed to block:

  • Bank transfers or Direct Debits you set up yourself.

  • Third-party wallets (like PayPal) if they don't pass the gambling code to us.

  • Unregulated or offshore websites that intentionally use the wrong business codes to bypass bank blocks.

  • Digital tools or crypto purchases as these payments use a different code (MCC 5815) so they might still go through.

We’re actively working on ways to cover a wider range of payment types, but if a gambling payment slips through, let us know. We’ll try to update our system to block that merchant in the future.

💌 Share With Us

Our Share With Us tool gives you a safe space to tell our specialist team about your support needs.

Unlike our regular chat, Share With Us leaves no history in your app. This means you can share private information safely. Once you message us, a specialist will quietly message your app chat to ask if it's a good time to talk. If you prefer a phone call, just let us know in your message.

You can use this tool to talk to us about things like:

  • Experiencing or being at risk of gambling harms

  • Mental health conditions or accessibility needs

  • Domestic or financial abuse

  • Difficult life events, like losing a job or a bereavement
