Sending South African Rand (ZAR) payments
This guide is to help you with sending ZAR payments. It has all the information you need to know, including when you can usually expect it to arrive and what you can do if it doesn’t.
Can I send ZAR payments to a business?
❌ No, you can only send ZAR payments to an individual.
Is the name I use on a payment checked?
✅ Yes. It’s really important that you use the correct account number. If the incorrect account number is used and it belongs to someone else, the payment will likely be returned.
What details do I need to use?
Recipient type (Person/Business)
Recipient full name (up to 35 characters, A-Z only)
Recipient’s date of birth
Bank name and SWIFT code
Account number (7 to 11 digits)
Recipient South African ID/Company registration number
Recipient country
Reference (optional, up to 18 characters)
How much money can I send?
You can send up to 196,000R per transfer.
How long will my payment take?
Most payments arrive within 1 working day, and nearly all arrive within 2 working days.
In some cases, because of bank holidays or if there are any extra checks on the payment it can take up to 3 working days.
You can see how long we expect your payment to take before you send it in the app, and after you’ve sent it by tapping it in your feed.
How will my payment be sent?
We’ll send your payment through the Payshap, Real-Time Clearing (RTC) or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) networks with partner banks in South Africa.
If the payment is under 50,000R, we'll send through Payshap.
If the recipient bank doesn't accept Payshap, we'll send through RTC.
If the recipient bank doesn’t accept RTC payments, we’ll send through EFT instead.
When do I have to make a payment for it to be sent out on the same day?
Payments must be made before 11:30 GMT to go out on the same day.
Can I recall a payment I made by mistake?
✅ Yes, if you’ve used the wrong name/account number or if you think it’s fraud. Let us know right away so we can help.
⏰ We can send the recall immediately.
Other useful information
You and the person you send the payment to need to fill out a mandate form once per year when the payment is sent out. This is a requirement from the South African Reserve Bank. Our payout partner will email the recipient with the link to the form. They have 6 days to complete it or the payment will be returned.
