Sending Kenyan Shilling (KES) payments
This guide is to help you with sending KES payments. It has all the information you need to know, including when you can usually expect it to arrive and what you can do if it doesn’t.
Can I send KES payments to a business?
🟠 Yes, you can send KES payments to an individual or business but you can’t send business payments to a mobile wallet.
Is the name I use on a payment checked?
✅ Yes. It’s really important that you use the correct account number. If the incorrect account number is used and it belongs to someone else, the payment will likely be returned.
What details do I need to use?
If you're sending via M-PESA
Recipient type (Person)
Full recipient name
Recipient mobile number (starting with the country code +254)
Recipient country
If you’re sending via Local bank account
Recipient type (Person/Business)
Full recipient/business name
Bank name
Account number (8 to 20 digits)
Recipient country
Reference (optional, up to 20 characters)
How much money can I send?
If you're sending via M-PESA You can send up to Ksh 250,000 per transfer, Ksh 500,000 per day and Ksh 1,500,000 per week/month.
If you’re sending via Local bank account You can send up to Ksh 999,999 per transfer.
How long will my payment take?
Most payments arrive within seconds, and nearly all arrive within 12 hours.
In some cases, because of bank holidays or if there are any extra checks on the payment it can take up to 2 working days.
You can see how long we expect your payment to take before you send it in the app, and after you’ve sent it by tapping it in your feed.
How will my payment be sent?
We’ll send your payment as a local bank transfer through the M-PESA, Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) or PesaLink networks with partner banks in Kenya, depending on what you tap when setting up the payee.
If the recipient’s bank doesn’t accept PesaLink payments, we’ll send through EFT.
When do I have to make a payment for it to be sent out on the same day?
If you're sending via M-PESA There is no cut off time. Any payment you make will go out on the same day you send it.
If you’re sending via Local bank account Payments must be made before 14:50 GMT to go out on the same day.
Can I recall a payment I made by mistake?
✅ Yes, if you’ve used the wrong name/account number or if you think it’s fraud. Let us know right away so we can help.

Other useful information
If you’re sending to a mobile wallet, anything typed in the reference field won’t go through.
