How to open a Monzo Personal Account
You’ve decided to open a Monzo account! We’re excited for you to join us, and we’re here to walk you through it. It takes just 10 minutes to apply after you download the app.
Step 1: Device and app requirements Because Monzo is a digital bank that lives on your phone, it’s important that you are able to update to the latest app versions for safety. To download the Monzo app, your mobile device needs to run a compatible operating system (OS). Our Mobile Operating System Support Policy tells you what OSs we currently support.
Step 2: Grab your photo ID To open a Monzo account you need to be at least 16 years old and live in the UK full time, with the right to reside here.
Before you start, you'll need your mobile phone and a form of valid, in-date photo ID. We accept:
Passports
Driving licences (provisional is fine)
National ID cards*
Unfortunately we can't accept CitizenCards as they are proof of age cards, not a proof of identity document.
Step 3: Download the Monzo app You'll find it by searching for 'Monzo' on the App Store or Play Store.
Step 4: Tell us about you When you open the app and start creating an account, we'll ask you for some information like your home address, and the email and phone number you want to use with your account.
Because we're a regulated bank, we'll also ask some questions about things like what you do for a living, and how you want to use your new account.
We might ask you to verify that you live at the address you chose so we can confirm you are residing in the UK. We accept the following documents in good standing as proof of address:
Utility bills: Gas, electricity, water, landline telephone, or broadband bills dated within the last 3 months (we can't accept bill reminders, arrears, or debt collection letters).
Government documentation: Official letters from the DWP, Jobcentre, NHS, or HMRC dated within the last 3 months (we can't accept P45 or P60 forms).
Council Tax statements: For the current year.
Financial statements: Current bank or building society statements from another UK bank, or credit card, wealth management, pension, or investment statements dated within the last 3 months.
Tenancy agreements: An active, valid UK tenancy agreement.
Driving licence: A valid UK driving licence (provisional is fine), if it wasn't already used as your primary photo ID.
Step 5: Help us confirm your identity We need to make sure you are who you say you are, so we’ll ask you to take a picture of your ID and then take a selfie video.
We compare this video with your ID, which helps us confirm you’re really you, and that you actually want to open an account.
Step 6: Finish choosing what you want from Monzo We have a few different account options, depending on what you need from us. Pick the account that suits you best!
Step 7: Activate your card once it arrives We'll send your new card out as quick as we can. Usually, it'll arrive within a couple of days.
When your card arrives in the post, activate it by following the instructions in the Monzo app.
That’s it! You’re ready to use Monzo to spend, save and manage your money. Thanks for joining us 💛
