Do I need Buildings Insurance?

Buildings insurance isn’t a legal requirement but it covers you financially if things go wrong. Whether you’re responsible for buying buildings insurance or not depends on your living situation.

House owners with a mortgage
It’s a requirement of most lenders that you have buildings insurance. It protects you against the cost of serious damage to your home.

Flat owners (Share of Freehold, Leasehold or Tenement Flats)
It will depend on the specific arrangements for the property you live in. You may have a management company that is responsible for organising the buildings insurance for the entire block. Or you may need to take out a joint policy with the other flat owners. In Scotland, you can take out buildings cover for a specific flat, however our policy is not suitable for this.

Renting
You don't need to buy buildings insurance as this is the responsibility of the landlord.

Even if you don’t need buildings insurance, you may still want to consider contents insurance which protects your things.
