Money Mules
Money muling is one of the most recent types of fraud we’re seeing. It’s when you get paid to move money between different accounts. It’s very serious and could really harm your future.
Here’s how it works:
Criminals and fraudsters look for ways to move fraudulent money around so it can’t be traced back to them or their bank accounts.
They recruit people using platforms like social media promising you easy money.
They’ll get you to agree to receiving a payment into your bank account, then quickly send it on to a different account. They’ll then let you keep a small cut of the money for yourself in return.
It’s a form of money laundering, which is a crime.
If you do this, you can get into serious trouble with the police and could end up in jail for up to 14 years. You could find it difficult to get a job in the future. And find it hard to get a bank account or borrow money like a loan or mortgage.
If someone asks you to use your bank account to accept and send on a payment, say no and report them to Action Fraud
