Opening a joint account

It’s easy to open a joint account with us. There are no long forms and no new ID checks.

Simply,

  1. Tap the Home icon in the menu bar

  2. Tap the plus icon in the top right of the screen

  3. Tap Apply for a Joint Account

If you have your account co-owner's details saved in your contacts, and have Payments with Friends switched on in your app settings – you'll be able to select your co-owner from the list.

Alternatively, you can tap invite someone which generates a unique link you can send the other party. It's important to note that for security purposes, this link expires in 24 hours. You'll need to send it again if this time limit elapses.

If you prefer not to send a link, and the app isn't showing the person you want to open a joint account with, there’s a few things you should check:

  1. You’re running the latest version of the Monzo app.

  2. Both of you have Find profile by phone number switched on in your app settings. To do this, go to Privacy & Security then Profile privacy.

  3. You both have a UK account, not a US account.

  4. You have the same phone number saved for the other person as we do. Sometimes even a small difference, like adding a country code (like +44) can cause problems.

A few things to note

At the moment we only offer joint accounts if you’ve already got a personal account with us.

Once you’ve opened a joint account, we won’t be able to close your personal account, without also closing the joint one.

We also can’t convert a joint account into a personal one. So if one person wants to close the joint account, we’ll close it for both of you.
