Opening a basic bank account
Basic accounts are free in the EU, and we designed them for people without another bank account. You don't need to buy anything else from us to open one
You can open a Basic account if you:
You'll need to have an Irish address and be able to provide documentary proof of your link to that address if required
Are 16 or older
Don’t already have another payment account in Ireland (unless it’s closing soon)
What you’ll get:
A Monzo debit card and IBAN
Direct Debits and Standing Orders
Pots to help you save and budget
Free cash withdrawals across Ireland and the EEA
What’s different from our other accounts:
Overdrafts are not included
No ATM fees
If you upgrade to a different Monzo account later, you won’t be able to switch back to Basic.
How to open a Basic account
Download and open the Monzo app.
Sign up by following the steps in the app.
If you’re eligible, we’ll open a Basic account for you. should take less than 10 minutes once you have the app.
