Unexpected fees and card issues abroad
This article covers what to do if you encounter unexpected fees or issues with your card while travelling.
Unexpected fees: If you were charged an extra fee for withdrawing money, it's likely because you selected your home currency instead of the local currency when given the option by the ATM. This means the merchant's bank applied their own exchange rate, likely with extra fees. To get a better exchange rate, always choose to pay in the local currency.
Magstripe ATMs: Some countries use 'magnetic stripe' (or 'magstripe') ATMs which are less safe than Chip and PIN. We automatically disable these, but you can turn your card's magstripe on for 7 days in the app. Go to Home, tap Card, and toggle on Magstripe ATMs.
