You can open a Basic account if:
You legally reside in the European Union
You’re an asylum seeker
You don’t have a residence permit, but your expulsion is impossible for legal or factual reasons
You don’t already have another payment account in Spain that lets you use the same core services, unless that account is closing
What’s included:
Monzo debit card and IBAN
Standing Orders
Pots to set money aside
Unlimited free ATM withdrawals
Unlimited free card replacements
What’s not included:
Joint accounts
Business accounts
Overdrafts
Under 18 accounts
If you want access to products that aren’t available on a Basic account, you’ll need to upgrade to a regular Spain Personal Account. To upgrade, you’ll need to self-declare Spain tax residency and provide a Spanish tax identifier (NIF).
How to open a Basic account
Get your ID ready: You’ll need to be 18 or over and have a valid, unexpired photo ID. The ID we accept depends on your nationality:
If you’re a Spanish citizen: DNI
If you’re a citizen of an EU/EEA/Swiss country other than Spain: national ID card issued by your own country or passport
If you’re a citizen of a non-EU/EEA/Swiss country: TIE or passport
Download the Monzo app: Search for "Monzo" in the App Store or Google Play and download it to your phone.
Tell us about yourself: When you open the app, we'll ask for some basic information like your home address, email, and phone number. We'll also ask a few questions about your occupation and how you plan to use the account.
Confirm your identity: We'll ask you to take a photo of your ID and record a short selfie video to confirm your identity.
If you’re eligible, we’ll open a Basic account for you and show this in your account details.
