How Monzo can help
We know things can be tough — especially if you're dealing with rising costs or going through something personal. Everyone’s situation is different, and we’re here to support you.
Talk to us, and we’ll try to find a solution that fits your circumstances. We’ll never ask you to pay more than you can afford.
We also understand how closely health and finances are linked. Our specialist team can offer tailored support, and if you need extra help, we’ll point you in the right direction.
What’s an unauthorised overdraft?
Your account can go below zero even without an overdraft. This is called an unauthorised overdraft.
We try to decline payments that would put you in this situation but some can’t be stopped, such as offline payments (on a plane) or pre-authorised transactions (like car rentals and hotels). You could also end up in an unauthorised overdraft if we have to reverse a refund from a dispute.
If you do go below zero, you won’t be able to make any more transactions until your balance is positive again. Pending payments will also fail. However, we don’t charge any interest or fees for using an unauthorised overdraft or for payments we decline.
