Questions? Answers.

Monzo? What is Monzo?

We're the bank that makes you feel differently about your money. We're new to Europe but more than 15 million customers trust us with their money in the UK.

When we started out back in 2015 we made it our mission to make money work for everyone. And that's exactly what we're here to do.

Is Monzo really free?

It really is. A Monzo current account, Joint account or Under 18s account are completely free, with no sneaky maintenance fees, ATM withdrawal fees or foreign exchange fees.

Your business can bank with us for free too. Our Lite plan for businesses is a free business bank account with Savings Pots, insights on your incomings and outgoings, and simple ways for your customers to pay.

Is Monzo a real bank?

Yes! We're an EU licensed bank, registered with the Bank of Spain with local Spanish IBANs. We're also part of the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme, meaning eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000.

Our security controls for large payments – like trusted contacts, QR code scanning and known locations – are just a few ways we’re protecting you and your money. Plus things you might already be familiar with, like card freezing if your card gets lost or stolen, and fingerprint or facial recognition to approve online shopping and getting into your Monzo app.

Why do I have to join a waitlist?

We're launching fully in Spain very soon but until we do, we've set up a waitlist for people to get their hands on an early access version of Monzo. Here's how it works. Get your name on the waitlist and download the Monzo app to find out your position in the queue.

As we invite people to apply for early access you’ll climb the queue, you’ll get your invite to apply if you reach the top. Early access is all about shaping the Monzo experience in Spain together. We’ll work with you to get your feedback and hear how we could make things even better before we launch fully. We’re capping early access accounts at 10,000 for personal accounts and 1,000 business banking accounts.

Is Monzo safe?

Absolutely, we're a licensed bank that's authorised and regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and part of the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme, which means your eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000. We have an office in Barcelona and although we're new to Spain we have over 15 million customers in the UK already.

How do I contact Monzo?

Speak to a real-life human if something urgent comes up. We're available through in-app chat when you need us.

You can chat to us in the app or email us at help@monzo.com.

Can I use Monzo with Apple Pay?

You can use your Monzo card with Apple Pay to make purchases in person and online. If you're using an Apple device that is iOS 26 or later you can now simply tap your Monzo card on the back of your phone to add it to Apple Wallet.

Does Monzo offer basic bank accounts?

We will be offering basic accounts when we have fully launched Monzo in Spain, you can join the waitlist for early access until then.

Basic accounts are free in the EU, and we designed them for people without another bank account. You don't need to buy anything else from us to open one.

You can open a Basic account if you:
  • Live in Spain
  • Are 18 or older
  • Don’t already have another payment account in Spain (unless it’s closing soon)

What you’ll get:
  • A Monzo debit card and Spanish IBAN
  • Direct Debits and Standing Orders
  • Pots to help you save and budget
  • Free cash withdrawals across Spain and the EEA

What’s different from our other accounts:
  • Overdrafts are not included
  • No ATM fees
  • If you upgrade to a different Monzo account later, you won’t be able to switch back to Basic.

*Free account: 0% AER, 0% NIR. No maintenance fees.

** Savings example: Interest is settled monthly and applies to any amount deposited in the Monzo Savings account, with a €100,000 limit. Under the current 1.6% AER, 1.60% NIR, maintaining a daily balance of €10,000 in a Monzo Savings account for 12 months would generate €161.18 in gross interest.
