What is a joint bank account?
A joint account is a separate account you share with another person. It makes managing shared money simpler, whether you're a couple, housemates, or family.
What you get
- Its own account number — a unique IBAN (International Bank Account Number) so you can pay bills or save for shared goals
- Two debit cards — matching pearlescent white cards, one for each of you
- A private personal account — the other person can't see your personal Monzo account
Who can open a joint account with Monzo?
Anyone who already has a personal Monzo account can apply. You'll need to open it with someone else who also has a personal Monzo account in Spain.
It doesn't matter if you're partners, spouses, housemates, or soulmates, as long as you're both Monzo customers, you can apply.
Do I need an individual Monzo account to open a joint account?
Yes, you can only open a joint account if you already have a personal Monzo account. Both of you need personal accounts in Spain.
Can we both use the account independently?
Yes, ownership is split equally, so you both have full access to the money and features. You can each spend, save, and manage the account on your own.
Can we use Pots on our joint account?
Yes, you can create Instant Access Savings Pots from your joint account, so you can both save towards shared goals.
What happens if we want to close the joint account?
If one of you wants to close the joint account, we'll close it for both of you. We can't turn a joint account into a personal one. To close it, just message us in the app.
Can we set spending limits or budgets on the joint account?
Monzo's app includes spending insights and budgeting tools to help you track your spending. You can set spending goals based on your spending trends, adjust them up or down, and see how long it'll take to reach your goal.
