From 1 July, some purchases arriving in Ireland from outside the EU may be subject to customs charges before they're delivered.
Even if you ordered from an Irish website, your order may still be shipped from outside the EU.
If customs charges apply, your delivery company may contact you before your parcel is delivered.
How do customs charges work?
If your purchase is subject to customs charges, here's what you can usually expect:
You place your order with the retailer.
Your parcel arrives in Ireland.
If customs charges apply, your delivery company will usually contact you before delivery.
You'll normally need to pay any customs charges before your parcel can be delivered.
Once payment has been received, your parcel continues through the delivery process.
Not every purchase will be affected, and the exact process may vary depending on the retailer and delivery company.
Who will contact me?
If customs charges need to be paid, you'll normally be contacted by the company delivering your parcel.
Different delivery companies may use different processes.
Monzo will never contact you to collect customs charges.
Can customs payment requests be genuine?
Yes.
Some delivery companies will legitimately ask you to pay customs charges before delivering your parcel.
Because these requests are becoming more common, scammers may also send fake customs messages hoping customers won't notice the difference.
How do I know if it's genuine?
If you're unsure:
Don't rush into making a payment.
Don't rely on links in unexpected text messages or emails.
Visit the courier's official website or app instead.
Check your parcel tracking before making any payment.
If something doesn't feel right, contact the delivery company using the contact details on its official website.
I ordered before 1 July. Why have I still been charged?
Some orders placed before 1 July may still be affected if they arrive after the new customs rules came into effect.
