How Direct Debits work

A Direct Debit is when a company collects money from your bank account for regular payments, such as a gym membership or utility bill.

Direct Debits are usually set up directly with the company you’re paying. By agreeing to a Direct Debit, you give them permission to collect money from your account when payments are due. The amount and frequency depend on your agreement with that company.

You can see your active Direct Debits in the Monzo app.

Cancelling a Direct Debit

You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time in the app:

  1. Open the Direct Debit.

  2. Tap Cancel Direct Debit.

Cancelling stops future payments only. It does not refund payments that have already been taken.

If you cancel a Direct Debit, it’s a good idea to contact the company as well to avoid missed payment fees or service interruptions.
