Monzo Bank Europe DAC, Sucursal en España registered with Banco de España is a member of the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme. The scheme guarantees deposits up to 100,000 euros per customer at Monzo.
These terms and using the Under 18s account
These legal terms are between you and Monzo Bank Europe Designated Activity Company, Sucursal en España (NIF: W0371919B.) (Monzo/us/we). Monzo for Under 18s (Under 18s account) is an account in your name which you can give your child access to.
We have no contractual relationship with any child who uses the Under 18s account. Instead you, as the parent or legal guardian and account holder, authorise your child to use the Under 18s account on your behalf. You’re responsible for making sure that any child who uses the Under 18s account does so in line with these terms and conditions.
Your Monzo Current Account terms and conditions also apply to your Under 18s account. If these terms and conditions are inconsistent with your Monzo Current Account terms and conditions on the same issue, then these Under 18s account terms will apply.
You’re responsible for your child’s use of the account. If we suffer any losses because of the way you or your child uses the account, you’re responsible for paying us back.
How the account works
You can set up an Under 18s account to help manage your child’s everyday spending.
You can have a maximum of 5 Under 18s accounts and can give one child access to each account. We’ll refer to the account using your child’s name in your app.
The account will be a new payment account. You’ll be the account holder, as well as the legal and beneficial owner of any money in the account.
Your eligible deposits in Monzo Bank Europe DAC, Sucursal en España (including your balance in the Under 18s account) are protected by the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme (DGS) administered by the Central Bank of Ireland up to EUR €100,000 per person. See our DGS Information Sheet for more information.
You’ll need a Monzo Current Account to have an Under 18s account. If we need to close or freeze your Monzo Current Account for any reason, we’ll also close or freeze your Under 18s account.
In order to sign up for an Under 18 Account, you will be asked to take a picture of your child’s identification document. We may ask for proof of your relationship with the child, or other information to verify your child’s identity at any time. You must be the parent or legal guardian of any child you give access to.
Getting your child set up
If your child is aged between 6–17, you can give them access to an Under 18s account.
We’ll use your child’s email address to link them to an Under 18s account. You can also grant your child access by using a QR code that you can generate in your Monzo app. When your child is logging in to the Monzo app through the QR code, they’ll see the name that you use on your Monzo Current Account before they are linked to your Under 18s account.
Your child doesn’t have to log in to the Monzo app or have their own device to use your Under 18s account. They can spend on the card without a device or the app, but won’t be able to see the information we display in the app (for example, the account balance). If they are not logged into the Monzo app on a device, we’ll ask you for your approval when they spend online.
If your child is logged into the Monzo app on their device, they’ll be able to spend online without your approval, and we'll treat it as your authorisation for that transaction.
Account information
By giving your child access to an Under 18s account, you’re giving them permission to access the account information for the Under 18s account (but not for your Monzo Current Account). This includes account details, transaction history and balance information.
You can also see your child’s details in the app, and you’ll be able to view the card PIN. You’re responsible for making sure that your child keeps the card and PIN safe.
You may also be able to give another Monzo Current Account holder access to your Under 18s account information. This person can’t spend or move your money, but they can freeze the card linked to your Under 18s account. You or we can remove this person from having access to the Under 18s account at any time. They can’t see any information about your other Monzo accounts.
We will handle your data in line with our Data Privacy Notice. You can also read our Accessibility Statement here.
Your child’s card
You can order a card for your child through the Monzo app. By doing this, you’re agreeing that your child can make card payments within limits that we set.
We’ll block them from using it with certain merchants as standard (for example, we’ll block payments to gambling companies).
Replacement cards
We'll never charge you for replacements where your child’s card expires, is faulty when you receive it, has been stolen, has been swallowed by an ATM or if we've cancelled your card because we're concerned about fraud.
If you’re replacing cards for another reason (including if your child loses their card or if it stops working because they damaged it), the first 2 replacement cards each calendar year are free. Any additional replacements requested in the same calendar year will cost €5 each.
We’ll deduct this fee from your Monzo Current Account, not your Under 18s account.
Adding a card to a device
Your child might be able to add their card to their device once they turn 14. You’ll see the latest version of these terms and conditions in the app.
Spending and sending money
There are limits on every Under 18s account, including how much money your child can spend and withdraw. Your child can spend and withdraw a daily total of EUR €300 (inclusive of both card spend and ATM withdrawals), with a maximum ATM withdrawal limit of EUR €100.
You can lower their spending limits and use customisable controls to turn cash withdrawals and online payments on or off. You’ll find these within Settings in your Monzo app.
Your child can use your Under 18s account to make these kinds of payments.
Card payments
Continuous payment authority
ATM cash withdrawals
For more information on how these payment types work, including ways you or your child may approve making the payment and withdraw approval, have a look at your Monzo Current Account terms and conditions. You accept responsibility for payments made by your child within the authority you have granted them, and acknowledge that we’ll treat those payments a child makes as authorised and made by you. This does not affect your rights, or our obligations, under the applicable legal provisions governing unauthorised payment transactions.
Top ups and balances
To top up your Under 18s account balance, you can transfer money from your Monzo Current Account. You can also transfer money from your Under 18s account back to your Monzo Current Account. You can’t transfer to any other accounts from your Under 18s account.
You may also be able to send friends and family a payment link via the app. They’ll be able to use this link to make payments into your Under 18s account.
We may also set a maximum balance for the account. We may refuse to accept any payments into the Under 18s account that would take you over the maximum balance. If you go over your maximum balance, we might freeze the Under 18s account until you have reduced the balance. If you don’t reduce the balance, we have the right to close the Under 18s account.
As you legally own the money, your Under 18s account might not be the right place to keep your child’s long term savings. If you are using your Under 18s account in this way, we may suggest you move those savings elsewhere.
Overdrafts
Payments from your Under 18s account will usually fail when there isn’t enough money in the account.
There are some exceptions to this – for example, if your child uses their card somewhere that doesn’t have an internet connection (such as on a flight), the payment could still go through.
If this happens, we’ll automatically transfer money from your Monzo Current Account to bring the Under 18s account balance back to zero. We’ll do this even if it takes your Monzo Current Account balance below zero. Please see your Monzo Current Account terms and conditions for more information about unauthorised overdrafts.

Your child won’t be able to contact us directly. You’ll need to tell us about things like stolen cards or fraudulent transactions. See your Monzo Current Account terms and conditions for more details.
We won’t get involved in a dispute between you, your child or anyone else you give access to the account. If we become aware of a dispute, we can freeze or close your Under 18s account.
Turning 18
Your child can use your Under 18s account until their card expires – even if that’s after their 18th birthday. We’ll close the Under 18s account when your child turns 19.
They can apply for their own Monzo Current Account when they turn 18. Unlike this account, they would be the account holder and legal owner of the money.
Closing the Under 18s account
Once this agreement has started it won’t end until your child turns 19 or you or we end it. You can cancel the Under 18s account within the first 14 calendar days of opening it, or close it at any other time. If you need help doing this, please get in touch with us. You’ll need to transfer your balance to your Monzo Current Account, and repay any money you owe us before we can close the Under 18s account. Once we’ve closed it, your card won’t work and neither you or your child will be able to access the Under 18s account.
We can close the Under 18s account immediately if you’ve given us any false information or if you’re using your Under 18s account in a way that isn’t allowed under these terms and conditions. We can also decide to close the Under 18s account for the reasons set out in your Monzo Current Account terms and conditions.
