Accept contactless payments with your phone
Accept contactless payments with your phone
We've teamed up with Stripe so you can turn your phone into a card reader, so customers can pay using a contactless card, Apple Pay or Google Pay – no payment terminal needed.
Before you get started
You'll need to connect a Stripe account. To do this:
Open the Get Paid tab in the Monzo app.
Tap Get set up under Accept card payments.
Complete Stripe's sign up process.
What you'll need
An internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
Location permissions enabled.
If you're using an Android device to accept contactless payments, your device must also:
run Android 13 or later
support NFC (Near Field Communication)
support Android Hardware Keystore
have Google Play Services installed
Taking a payment
Open the Get Paid tab.
Tap Accept contactless.
Enter the payment amount and description.
Ask your customer to tap their contactless card, Apple Pay or Google Pay device against the back of your phone.
If the payment doesn't register, ask your customer to hold their card or device against your phone for a little longer. Removing your phone case may also help.
You'll know the payment was successful when you see a green tick and the option to Share receipt.
If a payment can't be completed, choose Try another way to create a payment link instead.
Having trouble?
If you're using an Android device, make sure you're using the latest version of the Monzo app and that your phone is running Android 13 or later.
Even if your phone is running Android 13 or later, some devices don't support the hardware security features required for Tap to Pay. If your device isn't compatible, you'll need to use another supported device.
If you're still having trouble accepting contactless payments, contact us using the in-app chat and we'll do our best to help.
Important to know
Payments over €50 may require a PIN.
Apple Pay and Google Pay are generally not subject to the same €50 limit.
