Moving your child from an Under 18s account to a personal account
When your child turns 18, they can keep using their Under 18s account for up to a year. There’s currently no automatic upgrade to an adult account in Spain, so if they want to keep banking with Monzo, they’ll need to open their own personal account.
We'll remind you and your child 90 days before the account is due to close. If they haven't opened a personal account by their 19th birthday, we'll close the Under 18s account and return any remaining money to you.
Helping your child open a personal account
Signing up usually takes less than 10 minutes once they have the app.
Log out of their Under 18s account in the Monzo app.
Download the Monzo app if they don't already have it.
Sign up for a personal account and enter their details.
Verify their identity with a photo of their ID and a short selfie video.
Choose an account and activate their card when it arrives.
We accept:
Spanish citizens: DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad)
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens: passport or national identity card
All other nationalities: passport or TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero)
Their email address
Their personal account must have its own email address. If you added an email to their Under 18s account, they'll need to use a different one when they sign up, or you can update or remove the email first.
To change their email:
Open your Monzo app and go to their Under 18s account.
Tap the three dots on their card.
Tap Manage account.
Add, change or remove their email address.
Moving their money
Their balance won't move automatically. You'll need to transfer the money from their Under 18s account to their new personal account.
Remind them to set up any recurring card payments again on their new account.
Tax
Moving money to your child's new personal account could count as a gift under Spanish tax law (Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones), so tax may be due. If you're unsure, speak to a tax adviser.
