Using your Monzo card outside the US

You can use your Monzo card anywhere Mastercard is accepted, in the US or abroad ✈️

We don’t charge any foreign transaction fees when you use your card, so you will be charged according to Mastercard’s exact exchange rate.

You also don’t need to give us any kind of advance notice before your trip, your card should just continue to work as you travel 🗺️ All you have to do is have a great trip!

💡Pro tip: If a card reader asks you if you want to be charged in the “Local Currency” or in “US Dollars” - it’s best to choose the local currency option. That way, you can ensure Monzo is the one doing the currency conversion - not the merchant. We use Mastercard’s direct exchange rate, which means you always get the best conversion rate - where as the merchant will often provide a slightly worse conversion rate.

There are a handful of countries where your card won’t work - these are typically less visited countries, but it’s good to double check.

These countries include:

  • Belarus

  • Burundi

  • Central African Republic

  • Cuba

  • Democratic Republic of Congo

  • Iran

  • Iraq

  • Lebanon

  • Libya

  • Nicaragua

  • North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea)

  • Russia

  • Somalia

  • Sudan/Darfur

  • Syria

  • Ukraine

  • Venezuela

  • Yemen

  • Zimbabwe
