🎓 Turning 18 with an Under 18s account

You can keep using your Under 18s account for up to a year after you turn 18. There’s currently no automatic upgrade to an adult account, so if you want to keep banking with Monzo, you’ll need to open your own personal account.

We'll remind you and your parent or guardian 90 days before your account is due to close. If you haven't opened a personal account by your 19th birthday, we'll close your Under 18s account and any money left in it will be returned to your parent or guardian.

Signing up usually takes less than 10 minutes once you have the app.

You'll need:

Your personal account must have its own email address. If your parent or guardian added an email to your Under 18s account, you'll need to use a different one when you sign up, or ask them to change the email on your existing account first.

We accept:

Your balance won't move automatically. Your parent or guardian will need to transfer the money from your Under 18s account to your new personal account.

If you have any recurring card payments, you'll also need to set these up again on your new account.

Moving money from your Under 18s account to your new personal account could count as a gift under Spanish tax law (Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones), so tax may be due. If you're unsure, speak to a tax adviser.
