Authorised Card Scams

Card fraud is constantly evolving, and we're doing everything we can to protect you and your money.

An authorised card payment is one that you know you're making, and you believe you know where the money is going. This is different from unauthorised card fraud where you don't recognise a payment at all.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Here are some common types of scams so you know what to watch out for:

Here's some key things to remember:

  • Fraudsters can spoof their telephone number to make it look like a legitimate call.

  • If you get suspicious, hang up and call back a number you've checked yourself.

  • A scammer won’t want you to get off the phone, but a real company won’t pressure you to stay on a call.

  • Monzo will never contact you and ask you to move money from your account.

  • If you receive a call telling you to transfer money out of your account, it’s likely a scam.

  • Never share one-time-passcodes (OTPs) or approve requests from a third party.

  • Don’t be pressured into making quick decisions.

We’ve partnered with Take Five to Stop Fraud, an industry campaign that provides information on how to keep safe from fraudsters.

We’ve also partnered with Stop Scams UK (SSUK). Visit their site for more information on how to protect yourself from scams.
